Freeze-dried mold & tooling materials: Silicone vs. Polypropylene

Silicone Freeze-dried Mold

Silicone Freeze-dried Mold

Silicone Freeze-dried Mold, known as drying tray , as a food demolded tooling, which mainly used in freeze dryer food industry for produce freeze-dried fruid, candy, apply sauce, coffee, vegetable, snacks, beverage etc.

Why choose silicone materials as freeze-dried mold & tray, not polypropylene (PP) materials:

PP (polypropylene) freeze-dried molds features: low cost and fast processing, and can work for basic freeze-dried candy, chocolate, coffee, ice cube. However, when appearance and shaping are required, their drawbacks become obvious immediately:

  • The finished freeze-dried products have rough surfaces and fail to achieve a smooth and delicate finish.
  • They can only form very simple 3D shapes and are basically unable to create intricate three-dimensional patterns.
  • Fixed hardness makes them incompatible with different textures of freeze-dried goods.

Food-grade silicone molds have become the upgraded choice for freeze-drying applications, thanks to four capabilities that PP molds cannot offer:

  • High replication accuracy: Platinum-cured silicone with fine polishing delivers smooth and delicate finished surfaces.
  •
  • Elastic release for demolding: The cavity slightly deforms during demolding, which greatly reduces edge chipping rate.
  •
  • Adjustable hardness: Hardness can be selected according to products, balancing structural support and flexibility.
  •
  • Precision engraving capability: Supports high-precision 3D engraving. IP characters, brand embossments and complex textures can all be perfectly reproduced.

In addition, video-grade platinum silicone complies with food contact material standards such as LFGB and FDA, enabling easy access to export and high-end markets.

Comparison Dimension PP Mold Silicone Mold Impact on Freeze-dried Finished Products
Surface Replication Accuracy Limited, finished products tend to be rough High; smooth and delicate surface after fine polishing Directly determines the appearance grade
Elastic Resilience Almost none, hard demolding Excellent, slight deformation for relief Determines whether patterns suffer edge chipping
Hardness Adjustability Basically fixed Customizable to match customers' product requirements Determines adaptability to different textures
Precision Engraving Deep engraving & fine textures are limited High-precision 3D engraving Determines whether complex shapes can be realized
Demolding Smoothness High resistance, prone to scratching Low resistance; smoother with micro chamfers Directly affects production yield
Food Compliance Meets basic standards latinum silicone, dual compliance with FDA/LFGB Affects export and high-end market access

Customer freeze-dried mold Case:  polypropylene (PP)  VS. Silicone (hCR & LSR)

Client's core requirements:

  • Smooth and delicate surface on freeze-dried finished products to resolve the rough surface issue caused by PP molds.
  • 3D shaped patterns with clear textures and intact edges molded on the surface of finished goods.
  • Compatible with the existing freeze-drying process for smooth demolding.

Better  Solution:

  • Mirror polishing for the mold cavity, with food-grade platinum silicone raw material selected.
  • Two sets of designs, namely recessed patterns and raised patterns, are developed simultaneously for customer comparison and selection.
  • After multiple rounds of testing, 40–50A medium-low hardness silicone was finalized. Micro chamfers are applied on pattern edges to balance 3D definition and smooth demolding.

Final Results

  • The freeze-dried finished products feature smooth and delicate surfaces, completely eliminating the roughness issue caused by PP molds.
  • The mask pattern comes with clear textures and intact edges; no edge chipping or defects occur during demolding.
  • After the client approved the samples, multi-cavity production molds were manufactured to support mass production.

Choosing Silicone Molds Is More Than a Material Upgrade - It's a Competitiveness Upgrade

Many manufacturers only focus on the unit price of molds when calculating costs, while ignoring three hidden economic benefits:

1. Yield Benefit: PP molds cause frequent edge chipping and defective products, resulting in continuous hidden losses during mass production. Silicone molds enable complete demolding and effectively improve the yield rate, greatly reducing unit production costs.

2. Premium Benefit: Smooth surface and intact 3D shapes upgrade ordinary freeze-dried blocks into sophisticated, designer-style consumer products, supporting higher market pricing and product premium.

3. Innovation Benefit: The high-precision engraving capability of silicone molds makes differentiated designs such as IP co-branding and brand embossments achievable, helping brands stand out in the homogenized freeze-dried food market.

Looking for high-quality silicone molds for freeze drying, chocolate making, candy crafting, ice cubes, and homemade treats? Our food-grade silicone molds are professionally engineered to withstand freeze-drying environments, fully certified by FDA and LFGB, supplied straight from our manufacturing factory.

How to Get Sharper Patterns

How to Get Sharper Patterns

PP molds tend to cause difficult demolding for finished products. In addition, the molded patterns often come out rough with indistinct details. By contrast, silicone molds enable the production of far more intricate and refined patterns. They feature low demolding resistance, so finished goods can be released easily without damaging the delicate shapes.
